I’ve started writing a children’s book recently on Being Your Own Superhero. It’s been a joy to recall the different ways I have acted heroic in my life. You forget all the things you’ve done. You often forget the fears you have overcome to be where you are today. You forget the obstacles you have championed to attain freedom. You forget the reliance on your intuition that has informed you every step of the way. We often look outside ourselves to gain confidence or greater esteem, not paying enough attention to our own courage and feats of strength. As I have reminded my clients again and again, when looking for someone else to bring the expertise they have inside themselves, “You are the one you’ve been waiting for.”
Blueprinting success
I was talking with a friend recently about how people are experts in the “mistake department.” They go on for hours and hours about specific details of their failure or errors, but when it comes to sharing victories, we often stop short or draw a blank. I propose a shift in this archaic pattern of demise. What we need to hear are details of success, so we can apply them in our own lives. To hear the story behind someone’s achievement makes my heart soar. To learn how they did it, what they were thinking, where they summoned resources, or who they worked with, is powerful beyond measure. These are the seeds of strength, the rich fertilizer where things grow.
What is it about sharing our accomplishments in this society that some call bragging or arrogant? Where did this nonsense come from? And if we don’t toot our own horns, who will?
I encourage people to share their wins as often as possible. I enjoy drawing it out of them, so they can observe it from a completely new perspective. In fact, on my clients’ weekly prep form, the first section they fill out is the wins they have experienced since we last spoke. Hands down, what my clients notice is the more they focus on their wins of all shapes and sizes, the more the wins occur in their lives.
What you focus on grows
Now I know you are probably thinking “is it the chicken or the egg?” Which comes first? Looking for victories or the victories themselves? It’s obvious to me.
The more you focus on good, the more you recognize good occurs. If you get stuck for a period of time and all you see is gray skies, shortly the winds will blow more steadily in that direction. Whenever I hit a rough spot, I can clearly identify how my thoughts and feelings were not resonating in the best place. One thing we can do to keep our thoughts and feelings in a positive frequency daily, is by practicing gratitude. Even if a situation that unfolds is undesirable, we can find things to be grateful for about it. This principal helps me immensely if ever an undesirable outcome occurs. I become hyper-focused on the good I experienced around the situation. I do not allow myself to replay it over and over again or feel sorry that it occurred, because I know that other than learning the lesson the situation tried to present, there is no other benefit and I will continue to draw more of the same.
It’s not just your thoughts you need to watch, but how you feel.
Some of us have gotten pretty good at monitoring our thoughts or becoming the observer. The next step forward in manifesting not only what we want, but who we want to be, is paying attention to how we feel. How you feel is the best way to monitor your pulse. Whenever you make a decision or take an action, stop and see how you feel. Once you practice becoming in tune, it becomes apparent when you have made the right decision or not. I get a tightness in my belly if I sense there is even a perceived lapse of integrity involved in a situation. Where do you feel it in your body? Becoming aware and checking in with your feelings throughout the day is an essential part of being at the top of your game.
What needs to shift for you to be better than you were before?
You are your most significant competitor. I always tell my clients, “The only person you need to compete with is yourself.” You are all that matters. It’s very simple. Are you better than you were before? If so, you’re a winner. It’s imperative to remind ourselves, “It’s not that you don’t fall down, it’s how you get up!” It’s whether you show up with grace and dignity or agony and defeat. These are moment to moment choices that we make to be better than we were before. These benchmarks remind us that we are well on our way to being an example for others, and we need those examples. When we allow our light to shine, that allows others to do the same. This is my definition of a hero.
Are you ready to be your own hero? Let’s put on your cape and see how it feels. If you were asked to recall five things you have done to earn that title, what would they be? How have you become better than you were 10 years ago? You have done so much more than you recall and achieved far greater than you have imagined. All the wisdom you need to soar is inside you. Now, hands up in the air and fly!
Stefanie, Nicely done. I’d say, “another victory for you!”
Thanks for the reminder. Love, kate
