I had the pleasure of going skiing last week with some friends.  They all had many more years experience than myself.  I offered multiple times to ski alone, and allow them to challenge themselves, but they assured me that they wanted to ski at a more leisurely pace together.  As the day went on, they took me higher and higher up the mountain.  Suddenly I was at the face of a run I wasn’t sure I could ski confidently.  I felt angry.  I had offered to allow them to go ski the more challenging runs without me, and they refused.  My friend who took us there looked at me and said, “stay to the right.”  I glared at her, frustrated as could be, no words, only assessment.  At that moment, I jumped…I went inside, focused, summoned all my strength, concentrated, and talked myself successfully down the run.  I did not look up, I did not slow down to see where my friends were, I was overcoming a challenge I presumed was greater than myself.  At the bottom of the hill, my friend said…” you didn’t wait for us.”  I ceased to comment, for I was still cooling down.  Later, I was told I did quite well.  I was angry when I took off, frustrated I was taken past my point of comfort.  The stretch turned me into a far better skier that day, and I look back now, grateful for the challenge.

Life is about up-leveling by taking positive risks and overcoming challenges.  If we do only what we think is possible, we get what we’ve always gotten.  In order to be more and have more, we must do more than we thought possible.  Our perception changes as we are stretched beyond our comfort zone.  Our comfort zone keeps us locked in a sphere of complacency with the mundane.  If we do not venture out, rise up, and overcome, things will stay the same, period.  What risks do you long to take?  What challenge do you need to overcome to move ahead?  The choice is always yours.  The possibilities limitless.
